The early 1980s were a fertile time for all kinds of mixings. This included those of the short-lived group Kat-Tet, which spiced its echoes of the American jazz funk of the time with a just a touch of the tropical: with percussion by Charlie Chomerau-Lamotte, maestro of the congas, the slinking swing of drummer Eric Danquin, mainstay of the groups Atika and Gwo Siwo, you know they are on there for a reason. They provide an ample base for the astounding solo by Patrick Jean-Marie, the pianist who played for Vélo and the brother of the more famous Alain. He is the author of this track, which also features another of his brothers, Toto, on bass. Patrick Jean-Marie is a legend among musicians but remains still largely unknown to the general public; it’s high time we take a second look at him on this self-produced album.
