The sounds of the city, a rumble on the bass, two fingers of percussion, three taps on a keyboard: a small handful of notes and not a word, yet this track says it all, from the somber to the luminous, like a true detective story. In these five or so hypnotic minutes, you’ll find the essence of this percussionist-composer’s style, one of the most original heirs of the pureblood tambouyé players who brought an ample sense of innovation to Gwo Ka. It’s both rooted and airy, singular and yet nourished by the sonic multiplicity that made its way through the Caribbean at the end of the 1970’s; Erick Cosaque’s musicality definitely echoes the diversity envisaged by the high priests of creolization.
