Born in 1956 in Pointe-à-Pitre, Edmony Krater grew up listening to master percussionist Vélo, who would have a huge influence on the younger generation, and to whom this trumpeter dedicated the album from which this track is drawn. “We were always looking for ways to strengthen our identity; the Ka sound holds not just spiritual values, but political ones for us as well.” This was the philosophy with which Edmony Krater recorded with Zepiss, a group he founded when he arrived in Paris in 1983. Influenced by Don Cherry and all jazzmen who were seeking a particular sound, the Guadeloupian cut his own groove, as on this up-tempo ballad, which rests on a “polka piquée” rhythm, a ¾ time that is totally transfigured by a keyboard, trumpet, and saxophone that resemble the jazz of that time. “This song describes how we don’t manage to value our history, our specificity.”
