    (English version below)
    La première anthologie consacrée à l’un des artistes majeurs du Gwo Ka : Erick Cosaque. Chanteur, percussioniste, militant, Erick a oeuvré pour défendre et répandre les rythmes et la tradition Gwo ka aux Antilles mais aussi en métropole. Son oeuvre est désormais redécouverte par de nombreux mélomanes à travers le monde.

    Une voix forte, âpre, charnue, avec le timbre caractéristique des formes créoles de musique conviviale de plein air. Erick Cosaque a la voix faite pour passer par-dessus les deux tambours boula et le tambour makè qui sont en général associés, avec quelques percussions légères, dans le gwo ka de la Guadeloupe. Kout’ tanbou informel à un coin de rue, veillée traditionnelle chez un particulier, léwoz sonorisé dans une salle associative, c’est une voix à la fois chaleureuse et impérieuse que les Antillais des îles et de métropole ont aussi appris à connaître par le disque, la radio et la télévision, en plus de quarante-cinq ans d’activité professionnelle – une vingtaine d’albums personnels, une quarantaine de participations et collaborations avec des artistes de toutes les esthétiques et de toutes les générations de la musique caribéenne.

    Erick Cosaque compte parmi les figures centrales du gwo ka, tout en parvenant à n’appartenir à aucun dispositif institutionnel – ni label, ni fédération, ni subvention. Il est une des voix les plus fortes de cette musique depuis l’aube des années 70 mais, également, il en restaure l’esprit rebelle et spontanéiste dans une pratique d’artiste qui s’étend de l’âge du vinyle à l’ère numérique.

    Car Erick Cosaque ressemble au gwo ka, musique à la fois simplissime dans ses constituants et complexe dans son histoire et ses ressorts sociaux – un entrelacs de combats, de plaisirs, de mémoires, d’élans. En explorant l’œuvre très personnelle de ce chanteur, auteur, compositeur et percussionniste, c’est justement un univers que l’on aborde.
    L’univers pluriel, diffracté et incroyablement cohérent de la créolité.

    //////

    A strong, rough, plump voice with the typical tone heard in the creole outdoor musical gatherings. Erick Cosaque’s voice is made to go over and above the two boula drums and the makè drum which are associated in general, along a few light percussions, with the Guadeloupean gwo ka. Whether heard at an informal street corner kout’ tanbou, during a traditional evening at someone’s place or in the musical léwoz of a community center, his warm yet imperial voice has been known by West Indians, in the islands and in the mainland through music, radio and television thanks to a career spanning more than forty five years – about twenty solo albums, forty or so participations and collaborations with artists of all generations and genres within the Caribbean music scene.

    Although Erick Cosaque is a major figure in Gwo ka, he managed to avoid being part of any institutional system – no label, no alliance, no funding. His voice, one of the strongest in that genre, has been significant since the early 70’s for restoring the original spontaneous and rebellious spirit present in gwo ka with artistic creations starting in the age of vinyl and continuing in the digital era.

    Erick Cosaque resembles Gwo ka, whose music has simple components but is deeply rooted in a complex historical and social context made of fights, pleasures, memories and desires.
